Title: Housing Retention Specialist

JOB DESCRIPTION: The Guidance Center of Westchester Supported Housing program provides comprehensive case management support to nearly 300 formerly homeless individuals and families with histories of substance abuse and mental illness. Using the Housing First recovery-oriented model, our supported housing program promotes long-term stability in housing and helps participants take steps to achieve self-sufficiency. The Housing Retention Specialist plays a key role in fostering housing stability for all tenants participating in our housing programs. Specific responsibilities of this position include: Provide limited, brief clinical intervention, including crisis intervention to participants in their homes and in community settings throughout primarily lower Westchester County. Counsel participants on relapse prevention, problem-solving, and coping strategies to avoid hospitalization and loss of housing stability. Support participants transitioning to supported housing from inpatient or residential treatment Coordinate activities of, and assign cases to, several other NYSSHP direct service staff Work with case managers to ensure participants are connected with mental health and substance abuse treatment services; follow up on progress. Provide leadership in crisis situations Participate in case conferences Provide training and guidance to case managers in the use of evidence-based, recovery-oriented approaches such as motivational interviewing, harm reduction, and critical time intervention.

REQUIREMENTS: Master’s degree in social work, mental health counseling or marriage and family therapy License or license eligible preferred (LMSW, LMHC, MHC-LP, LMFT) A valid NYS driver’s license; ability to drive to various locations to meet with participants Minimum of three years’ experience providing relevant services such as assessment and individual and/or group therapy or psychosocial rehabilitation, to adults with mental illness and substance abuse disorders Knowledge of various evidence-based practices Strong commitment to recovery oriented approaches
