Get Road Trip Ready!

Written by Kristin Anchante, Project Manager

As of this week, the unofficial start of summer is officially here. Pre-COVID, this probably conjured thoughts of late night bonfires, week-long getaways, and barbeque pool parties. This year, things might still look differently.

If you want to enjoy the summer, while avoiding crowds and saving time and money, a weekend road trip or two could be the answer. Take advantage of a long weekend or use that PTO you didn’t get to use last year and plan some Friday through Sunday (or even Monday!) trips.

There are a lot of great places to visit right here in the Hudson Valley (link to Hike the Hudson Valley Post) and other outdoor destination spots that are fully worth the drive: Cape Cod, MA; Burlington, VT; Ausable Chasm, NY; and Norwalk, CT, to name a few.

In no particular order, here are a few things you’ll want to pack for your road trip (if you don’t already have them in your car):

  • Hand Sanitizer or Wipes

  • Disposable or Reusable Masks

  • Car Charger or Power Bank

  • GPS/Phone/Map/Navigation System

  • Sunscreen

  • First Aid Kit (e.g. bandages, headache medicine, antibiotic ointment)

  • Tissues and Napkins

  • Water or Other Flat Beverages

  • Healthy Snacks (e.g. jerky, dried fruit, pretzels)

  • Music Playlist/Audiobook/Podcast

  • Roadside Assistance Kit (e.g. jumper cables, mini cones)

If you’re going on a long trip (over a few hundred miles one way), it’s a good idea to get a 12-point inspection at your local car dealer before and after. At the very least, you’ll want to:

  • Get an oil change if you’re due soon

  • Make sure your wipers work in the event of heavy rain and top off your washer fluid while you’re at it!

  • Properly inflate your tires to help with gas mileage and ride quality

  • Check your spare – is it inflated and ready to go in case of a mishap? Do you have a jack?

Whatever your plans this summer, stay safe and have fun!
